Aliant Telecom announces three New Cellular Sites for South Coast of Newfoundland
St John’s, NF -- Aliant Telecom (NewTel) announced the completion of two analog sites on the South Coast today, and the near completion of a third. The two completed sites are in Hermitage-Sandyville and Ramea, and the one nearing completion is in Harbour Breton. The Harbour Breton site will be completed mid-December.
"I’m very pleased that Aliant Telecom has moved forward with this development - they recognize that this will benefit the South Coast economically and also benefit the people of the area,” said Oliver Langdon, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs and MHA for the district of Fortune Bay - Cape La Hune.
"We are pleased to announce that we have developed three new analog cellular sites, and that two are now up and running. Customers in and around the communities of Ramea, Hermitage-Sandyville, and Harbour Breton will soon enjoy the convenience, safety and flexibility of wireless services," said Frank Fagan, President, Aliant Telecom Wireless.
The three new sites represent an investment value of $750,000. The new analog sites bring cellular coverage to another 4,000 Newfoundlanders.
"This installation will also provide access to cellular service 30-50 kilometres offshore and as well to motorists on the nearby highways,” said Fagan.
Fagan said he is pleased to be able to launch the three new sites. "The new sites bring thousands more Newfoundlanders into the Wireless age. The south coast is a busy and dynamic area. Having access to mobile communications will contribute to the growth of the region," he said. Aliant Telecom is the only provider of cellular service to Newfoundlanders who live outside of the St. John’s area.
"This is good news for the people of Ramea, Hermitage-Sandyville and Harbour Breton," said Minister Langdon. "Access to modern communications services is important to the economic development of this area of the Province, and also provides an effective safety tool for many people."
