The Nordic Beat, from St. John’s, NL, is a provincial finalist in the Aliant Garage Band Contest!
St. John’s, NL, December 15, 2006 - The Nordic Beat, a band from St. John’s, NL, has been named the Newfoundland and Labrador finalist in the second annual Aliant Garage Band Contest. The contest is aimed at inspiring young Atlantic Canadians to make music with their friends and family. Amateur bands from across Atlantic Canada - whose members are in their teens or twenties have been encouraged to upload audio or video clips of two of their best songs to Aliant’s Youth 101 web site for review and judging.
“It was a tough decision for our judges to narrow down the four finalists with 90 bands entering the contest from across Atlantic Canada,” said Gayle Lunn, Youth Market Manager. “We’re really excited to be giving The Nordic Beat the chance to win over new fans with some great exposure!”
New this year, Aliant customers will have access to Garage Band content from all provincial finalists through their cell phones. Customers with capable phones will have access to view concert footage via their media player, and associated music tracks can be downloaded from the Featured Music category in the Aliant Mobile Music store.
As a finalist, The Nordic Beat opened up for Mobile on December 2 at Memorial University’s Breezeway bar. Mobile, a Montreal based band, released their debut album “Tomorrow Starts Today” in April of 2006. Their first release “Montreal Calling” is featured in EA Sports NHL 07 and also on MuchMusic’s Big Shiny Tunes 10. And their video for “Out of my Head” was number one twice on the MuchMusic countdown – spending a record-setting 22 weeks on the countdown in total. Aliant will be featuring video clips from the show through the Groove Mobile browser.
The band was speechless after they heard they won the contest. “Thanks for picking us,” said Adam, Vocals/Bass for The Nordic Beat. “It’s a surreal experience!” Band members include Luke Major; Guitar/Vocals, Adam Hickey; Vocals/Bass, Lee Hanlon; Guitar/Vocals, Duncan Major; Bass/Keyboards and Chris Johansen; Drums.
Finalists from each province now have the chance at the ultimate grand prize – a spot on the 2007 POP Montreal schedule, complete with VIP treatment. Songs and video footage from each of the top four bands have been posted on
www.aliant.net/youth101 for family, friends and fans to listen to and vote for between November 28 and December 31, 2006. Voters can also win one of five prize packs, including goods from Aliant, Mobile and VANS.
